Long-Distance Horse Shipping To and From Maine
Because of Maine’s location in northern New England, many trips involve considerably more than a few hours on the road. A horse purchased in Kentucky, for example, may need to travel more than 1,000 miles before reaching its new barn in Maine. Cross-country moves can be considerably longer.
Long-distance horse transportation is one of American Horse Transportation’s specialties.
Our transportation network includes a hub in Lexington, Kentucky, which helps us coordinate trips between the East Coast and other parts of the country. For horses traveling farther west, routes can continue to destinations throughout the Midwest, Mountain West and Pacific Northwest.

Maine Horse Transportation for More Than Just Moving
There are plenty of reasons a horse may need professional transportation. We work with individual owners, breeders, trainers, farms and equestrian professionals who need transportation for:
- Horse purchases and sales
- Farm and stable relocations
- Training programs
- Horse shows and competitions
- Breeding appointments
- Thoroughbreds and racehorses
- Seasonal moves
- Long-distance relocations
We offer scheduled door-to-door transportation as well as private charter options. If your dates are flexible, scheduled transportation can be an economical way to move an individual horse or small group. Private transportation may be a better fit when you need exclusive use of the trailer or have more specific scheduling requirements.
Every situation is different, so our team can help you determine which option makes sense for your horse and travel plans.
What Happens While Your Horse Is on the Road?
It’s one of the first questions horse owners should ask before choosing a transportation company.
Our drivers don’t simply load the horses and drive until they reach the destination. They stop approximately every four hours to inspect the horses and equipment, replenish water and hay, and check the horses for signs of physical stress.
Horses are provided an alfalfa and grass hay mixture during transportation. Our equipment also features air-ride technology, ventilation and multiple stall configurations designed with equine transportation in mind.
You can learn more about our equipment on the American Horse Transportation fleet page.
Stall Options for Your Horse
Different horses may require different accommodations during a long trip. Customers can generally choose between a stall-and-a-half and a larger box stall.
A stall-and-a-half measures approximately 4′ x 9′, while a box stall measures approximately 8′ x 9′. Box stalls are required for mares traveling with foals and may also be appropriate for breeding stallions or horses requiring additional space.
Not sure which setup is right for your horse? Our horse transportation FAQ answers common questions about stalls, feeding, blankets, leg wraps, paperwork, tack and what to expect during a trip.
Transporting Horses Between Maine and New England
We can also help owners moving horses between Maine and other parts of New England. That might mean bringing a recently purchased horse north from Massachusetts, moving between barns in Maine and New Hampshire, or arranging a longer trip through Vermont and into other parts of the Northeast.
If your trip takes you west of Maine, American Horse Transportation also provides horse transportation in Vermont and transportation to many other destinations throughout the United States.
For longer trips, our team can discuss scheduling, routing and available stall arrangements based on where your horse is coming from and where it needs to go.
Preparing a Horse for Interstate Transportation
If your horse is crossing state lines, you’ll need to have the appropriate paperwork ready before pickup. American Horse Transportation requires a current health certificate and Coggins report from your veterinarian for interstate transportation.
It’s a good idea to start arranging veterinary paperwork well before your scheduled pickup rather than leaving it until the last minute. Requirements can vary depending on your horse’s origin and destination, so check with your veterinarian about current state requirements when planning the trip.
When contacting us, it also helps to have your pickup and delivery locations, approximate shipping dates, number of horses, preferred stall arrangement and any special handling information available.
